Not what good girls do

Katy Perry, for the uninitiated, is the US ‘sensation’ who’s had PR people throughout her label scrabbling to say silly things like “OMG THIS IS THE FUIRST TIME SINCE THE BEETLES WE’VE HAD A PROSPECT THIS BIG THE BEELTES OR KELLY CLARKSON ANYWAY ONE OF THOSE TWO SHE WILL BE BE AS BIG AS” and who, given time, will probably sell some records in the United Kingdom as well.

Her album is quite good, in a 6/10 sort of way. It sounds a bit like Ms. Clarkson without the cackheaded stubbornness, or Mini Simpson’s ‘Bittersweet World’ with a better star but less varied songs. It sounds like Perry looks in pictures: all look-at-me, Popular Girl At School attitude, unconcerned with your friendship or fandom. It tries hard to appear as though it is not trying hard, like your mum every time she stands up.

‘Kissed A Girl’, however - the latest ‘buzz’ track from the album - stands out. Why? Certainly not because of its preposterously immature eulogising of lipstick lesbianism, no, but for the following reasons which we will list in this list of reasons:

1) It was written by Cathy Dennis
2) and Max Martin
3) and Dr Luke,
4) who also produced it.
5) It has got a brilliantly vampish electrothud chorus
6) that sounds like being slammed forcefully against a wall
7) by an eyeliner-ed girl in knee-high boots
8) intent on a severe personal space
9) violation.
10) Which is amazing, obviously.

Have a look and/or listen:

Ooh, sexy! (etc)

‘I Kissed A Girl’ is out next month.
